The Munich I Public Prosecutor’s Office has conducted an investigation into several traders who are alleged to have violated EU trade embargoes. The case concerns the sale of around 50 luxury cars with a total value of over ten million euros. Prosecutor Axel Walz explained that these vehicles are “typically used by members of the Russian political and business elite.”

Luxury Cars to Russia? An Armored Vehicle

A particularly notable case involved an armored Mercedes vehicle worth €650,000. According to the investigation, the traders listed countries like Kazakhstan as the destination to circumvent the embargo. Following the attack on Ukraine in 2022, the European Union imposed strict sanctions against Russia.

The Munich I Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently handling 200 to 300 embargo-related cases. According to the authority, these include very minor cases reported by customs officials to the authorities—for example, a package sent by a Russian woman living in Germany to a relative back home, or vice versa.
