During an inspection, veterinary service employees discovered the dead animals. According to provided data, 64 living geckos were temporarily rehomed elsewhere.
The Haßberge District Administration reported that the housing conditions were unbearable and in gross violation of the Animal Welfare Act. The owner did not care for the needs of the reptiles. According to available information, the geckos were kept in a separate room of about 16 square meters. They were housed in 20 terrariums, as well as in a cabinet—in two drawers measuring 36 by 25 centimeters.
Owner insulted police officers and faces criminal prosecution
The man did not admit his guilt and refused to cooperate. Furthermore, he showered insults upon the veterinary service employees and police officers. He now faces responsibility for violating the Animal Welfare Act.
Additionally, he is obliged to pay for the examination and maintenance of the rescued geckos, some of which are severely emaciated. The cause of death for the deceased animals must be established by the pathology department of the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL).
Geckos are lizards from the family of so-called Squamata, which are distributed worldwide and inhabit various environments from deserts to tropical forests. They are often kept as terrarium animals.Source: Haßberge District Administration
