Municipal sites will switch to a modernized payment and access control system, which will significantly reduce waiting times at the entrance. From May, the current M-Bäderkarte will receive a full digital copy that will be stored directly on smartphones. This innovation will save citizens from having to stand in long lines at the ticket offices on hot days, turning the mobile phone into a convenient and fast pass to the pool.
Passing to the water by simply touching a smartphone to a reading device at the turnstile will become possible as early as May 1. This day marks the beginning of the phased implementation of the new digital system. The main reason for these changes is the termination of technical support for the current cash desk software and old chip cards. As representatives of the municipal company Stadtwerke München (SWM) reported, the outdated technologies will be replaced by a modern cloud solution. The new platform will be integrated into the citywide digital network, ensuring a high level of data protection and stable operation even during peak loads on the hottest weekends.
Digital pass copy: the Munich card will appear in mobile phones
The updated system will offer visitors maximum flexibility in using their subscriptions. The card will be available both in the familiar plastic form and as a full digital copy in the mobile application. This will allow guests to pass through automatic turnstiles instantly without seeking assistance from staff at the counter. Thanks to cloud technologies, any funds used for payment are instantly synchronized between the mobile phone and your plastic card. Thus, the current balance is always displayed in the application in real-time. Topping up the account will also be available online: money can be added at any time, literally on the way to the pool. In addition, the special service will feature a useful function to check the current occupancy of the pools, helping to plan visits during less crowded hours.
The transition process to the new digital platform is divided into several stages and scheduled over five months. The modernization of IT systems starts on May 1 at the Dantebad and Schyrenbad pools, opening the summer season. Two weeks later, the remaining outdoor pools in the city will connect to the new system. The transition of indoor complexes to new data transfer protocols is planned for the summer period—during their traditional maintenance closures. This decision avoids any operational disruptions or discomfort for visitors. During the works, only electronic components—sales terminals and turnstile readers supporting mobile devices—are updated. Specialists will complete all settings so that by the beginning of October, the entire network operates as a single digital mechanism.
Preserving familiar payment methods
Representatives of the municipal company emphasize that the introduction of new technologies does not cancel existing payment options. For those with a remaining balance on their old cards, a comfortable transition period is provided. The money will not be lost: it can either be spent before a specific pool is re-equipped or transferred to a new card. From October 1, when all municipal sites have finally switched to the updated digital standard, the remaining balance will be officially transferred to the new M-Bäderkarte. Importantly, the customary 10% discount for each visit is maintained in full. Those who decide to completely abandon the new system will be able to return their funds through the central office.Detailed instructions on using the new subscriptions will be posted on the company’s website and on information stands. Staff will also be ready to answer visitors’ questions on-site. Notably, the option to purchase a standard entry ticket at the box office in person will remain for those who prefer traditional cash payment methods. Furthermore, the Munich Pass social cards, as well as family and school subscriptions, will eventually be integrated into the digital format, making their use on smartphones even simpler and more accessible for every family.
