Nuremberg to conduct comprehensive population warning system test

On Thursday, March 12, the streets of Nuremberg will be filled with sharp sounds: more than 100 sirens will go off simultaneously in the city, and emergency notifications will be sent to residents' smartphones.

The large-scale action, which may cause temporary anxiety among unprepared citizens, is actually a planned event. It turned out that such a check is necessary to ensure safety in the event of real emergencies.

This coming Thursday, at 11:00 AM, the noise level in Nuremberg will temporarily rise. Within the framework of the state-wide warning day, the integrated control center will activate an extensive sound warning network in test mode, covering all districts of the metropolis. The test signal, according to the mayor’s office, will allow technical specialists to ensure the equipment is in good working order and identify possible blind spots where the sound of sirens is not heard clearly enough.

Procedure for the sound of sirens and information support

In the event of a real danger, a wailing sound emitted for one minute informs the population of a serious threat. This signal is a strict instruction for citizens: it is necessary to immediately turn on radios and closely follow emergency news broadcasts. On the day of the training alarm, members of the Nuremberg fire service will be available to provide residents with any additional information. For this purpose, a special hotline has been allocated at the phone number 09 11 / 6 43 75-8 88.

Digital shield: mobile technologies and the Cell Broadcast system

In parallel with the sound signals at 11:00 AM, the Cell Broadcast mobile information technology will be tested in a planned manner through the MoWaS modular system. This modern development is designed for the instantaneous protection of the population during disasters throughout Germany. Registered users of the popular Katwarn and Nina applications will receive a short text message directly on their smartphones. The Bavarian Center for Warning and Operational Control of Population Protection (BayMLZ) is taking the initiative this year to launch the state-wide warning, utilizing all available digital channels.

As further reported by the Nuremberg mayor’s office, the capabilities of the MoWaS system are not limited to mobile devices. Information screens at the main station, in the subway, as well as in large shopping centers such as Frankencenter and Plärrermarkt, will again be included in the information process. In addition, test messages will be displayed on Roadside Screens outdoor billboards and digital city signboards, turning the urban space into a unified warning system.

Owners of mobile phones and tablets will receive a warning SMS if their devices are within the coverage area of the cellular network. It is important to consider a technical nuance: on many smartphone models, the reception of test warnings must be activated manually in the system settings. Authorities urge citizens to check their devices in advance so that the training alarm does not come as a surprise and helps practice the algorithm of actions in an emergency situation.
