New Secondhand Store “Raben Store RS1” to Open in Munich on May 5

Munich – A new chapter begins at Schwanthalerstraße 79: where the inclusive café and sewing workshop “Nähwerk” once stood, the “Raben Store RS1” will open its doors on May 5.

Behind the new secondhand department store is “Der Weiße Rabe,” a long-established social inclusion enterprise based in Munich.

A Space for Sustainable Shopping and Social Inclusion

Spanning around 170 square meters, the store offers an accessible, community-oriented shopping experience for Munich residents. The range consists exclusively of donated secondhand goods, including household items, books, jewelry, and clothing—traditional Bavarian attire among them. Store manager Stephanie Hong-Fichtinger describes it as “a small shop filled with fine things,” aiming to serve both environmental and social goals.

From Sewing Workshop to Secondhand Shopping

The transformation of the location was a conscious shift. The previous concept, combining a café with a sewing workshop, did not succeed in providing adequate employment opportunities for all staff. The work proved too specialized, according to the team. In contrast, the new store offers more flexible and relatable tasks—working the register, stocking shelves, advising customers, and sorting donated goods—creating a broader scope for inclusion.

Work as a Path to Integration

The new store will employ around 40 individuals, many of whom face significant barriers to employment, such as long-term unemployment, limited language skills, or other challenges. “For many, Der Weiße Rabe is more than just a job—it provides structure and a sense of belonging,” said Hong-Fichtinger. With this initiative, the organization hopes to not only promote affordable, conscious consumption but also create meaningful employment and personal development opportunities.

Design with Purpose and Personality

Visually, the store embraces a minimalist aesthetic, highlighted by subtle gold accents and careful attention to detail. Enrico Schreck of Der Weiße Rabe described the interior as “design-reduced, but gold-accented.” Even the three fitting rooms are thoughtfully furnished with matching curtains.

Opening Hours and Central Location

Centrally located in Munich’s Bahnhofsviertel, the “Raben Store RS1” will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. With its blend of sustainable products and inclusive employment, the project aims to send a clear message: responsible consumption, social participation, and a sense of community belong together.
