Customs Officers Find Monitor Lizard Meat During Baggage Check at Munich Airport

During a baggage inspection at Munich Airport, customs officers discovered monitor lizard meat in a traveler’s luggage. The animals are considered a protected species.

Munich – A passenger attempted to smuggle dried monitor lizard meat into Germany via Munich Airport, according to a statement from the Munich Main Customs Office. The traveler claimed he had brought the meat as a gift for relatives.

The meat was found in a suitcase during a baggage check on a flight arriving from Nigeria. According to the customs office, such products come from strictly protected species and are subject to strict import and export regulations under European Union law.

The traveler was unable to present the required documentation for importing products from protected species. Due to “hygienic and health risks,” the meat was immediately destroyed after inspection by the relevant veterinary office, customs officials reported.

“Illegal imports of wildlife products not only endanger threatened species but can also spread diseases,” said Thomas Meister, spokesperson for the Munich Main Customs Office. The unauthorized import of such products represents a serious risk to public health, the statement emphasized.
