The incident occurred before the aircraft had crossed the Atlantic Ocean and prompted an in-flight emergency.
Emergency Call Shortly After Takeoff: Pilots Declare “Mayday”
According to aviation website averhald.com, the cockpit crew issued an emergency call to air traffic control shortly after departure. The dramatic situation was captured in radio transmissions later published on the YouTube channel “You Can See ATC.” The pilot can be heard declaring:
“Engine failure, left engine. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!”
The call confirmed the failure of the aircraft’s left engine.
Air traffic controllers in Washington responded immediately, granting the aircraft clearance to return to the airport without delay. Due to the large quantity of fuel onboard—typical for long-haul flights—the plane had to circle the area multiple times to reduce weight before making a safe landing.
Safe Landing After About 30 Minutes in the Air
Roughly 30 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft landed safely on Runway 19C at Dulles Airport, operating with only one functioning engine. According to the New York Post, all 219 passengers and 11 crew members escaped the incident without injury.
So far, United Airlines has not released specific information about the cause of the engine failure. However, a comprehensive technical investigation is standard procedure in cases of this kind. The airline issued a brief statement saying that safety is its top priority and that the affected aircraft is currently undergoing inspection.
