After weeks of construction work in Fröttmaning, the Munich Public Utilities (Stadtwerke München, SWM) and the Munich Transport Corporation (MVG) have officially announced the restoration of full operations.
Extensive Infrastructure Renewal North of Fröttmaning
As part of the project, several key track elements were renewed in the area north of Fröttmaning station. Since June 9, the transport authorities have replaced six switches, including ties and ballast. In addition, 640 meters of running rail and 1,300 meters of power rail were replaced. SWM stated that the components had reached the end of their expected service life and required replacement.
Second Phase of an Ongoing Modernization Project
This construction phase marked the second stage of a broader project focused on switch replacement near Fröttmaning. Last year, nine switches, approximately 1,000 meters of running rail, and 1,300 meters of power rail had already been renewed. The modernization effort aims to enhance operational safety and ensure a more stable timetable over the long term.
Weather Delays Extended Construction Timeline
Originally, the work was scheduled to conclude earlier. However, adverse weather conditions caused delays, extending the partial closure until July 30.
Evening Disruptions to Continue Until August 7
Although the line is now fully operational, final construction work will continue during evening hours from July 31 through August 7. During this period, passengers will experience minor service changes:
On Thursday, July 31, and from Sunday, August 3, through Thursday, August 7, passengers must change platforms at Fröttmaning after 10:00 PM in order to continue in their intended direction. The station itself remains accessible, and the procedure affects both directions of travel.
This arrangement allows the remaining work to be completed without requiring a full suspension of service.
The completion of this construction phase marks another important step in the ongoing modernization of Munich’s subway network.
