Ammonia Leak at Zirndorf Shopping Center Triggers Major Emergency Response and Evacuation

A sharp, unusual odor inside the ZIM shopping center in Zirndorf near Nuremberg led to a large-scale deployment of emergency services on Thursday morning.

Shortly after the center opened, multiple visitors reported respiratory irritation. Firefighters, police, and rescue teams responded immediately, and the entire building was evacuated. On-site investigations later confirmed the presence of ammonia in the air.

Forty Emergency Responders Deployed as Precautionary Evacuation Carried Out

According to Jochen Bernecker, chief commander of the Zirndorf Volunteer Fire Department, the alarm was received at around 8:30 a.m. Emergency crews from the fire department, police, and medical services were dispatched without delay. Approximately 40 responders were involved in the operation. Their immediate priority was to evacuate the building completely to ensure the safety of customers and staff.

Ammonia Detected but Source Remains Unknown

Following the evacuation, fire crews used specialized detection equipment and confirmed ammonia in the air. The pungent odor was noticeable even to the emergency responders. Frank Bauer, district fire chief of Fürth, explained that several smaller air conditioning units and the central ventilation system were examined. However, since the ventilation system does not use ammonia, it was ruled out as the direct source of the leak. Authorities suspect the gas was released elsewhere and then circulated through the building via the ventilation system.

Analytical Task Force from Munich Assists in Investigation

To identify the source of the chemical release, Munich’s Analytical Task Force was called in for support. The ATF specializes in detecting and assessing hazardous chemical and biological substances. Working closely with local responders, the specialists from Munich coordinated remote diagnostics. Their analysis confirmed without doubt that ammonia was present.

Fifteen People Treated for Mild Respiratory Irritation with No Hospitalization Required

As fire chief Bernecker reported, fifteen individuals were given medical attention at the scene after experiencing minor respiratory symptoms. After brief observation by emergency medical services, none required further treatment or hospital admission. All affected individuals were able to leave the area shortly thereafter.

Ammonia Source Remains Undetected but Operations Resumed After Four Hours

Despite continued investigations supported by the shopping center’s facility management, emergency crews were unable to pinpoint the exact origin of the ammonia release. Once the building had been thoroughly ventilated and air quality measurements showed no remaining danger, the site was cleared for reopening at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Swift Emergency Response Prevented More Serious Consequences

Thanks to the rapid and coordinated actions of emergency personnel, the incident ended without serious harm. While the cause of the ammonia release remains undetermined, all safety procedures were effectively executed. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation to prevent any recurrence.
