RTL Acquires Sky Deutschland for €150 Million to Expand Streaming and TV Reach

The RTL Group announced plans on Friday to acquire Sky Deutschland for €150 million, marking a significant consolidation in the European media landscape.

With headquarters in Unterföhring near Munich, Sky Deutschland will be merged with RTL Deutschland, including its streaming platform “Wow.” The combined entity will serve approximately 11.5 million paying customers with a broad portfolio of entertainment, live sports, and news content.

Stephan Schmitter, CEO of RTL Deutschland, described the acquisition as “an exceptional opportunity.” He said, “We are bringing together two major European media companies to build a leading platform for TV and streaming.” Barny Mills, current CEO of Sky Deutschland, also welcomed the move. “The planned merger with RTL represents an exciting new chapter in the history of Sky Deutschland,” he said.

RTL Aims for Full Integration Across the DACH Region

The acquisition is part of RTL’s strategy to strengthen its market position in the German-speaking region, especially in entertainment, sports coverage, and news. The company intends to fully integrate Sky’s operations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, along with managing customer relationships in Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and South Tyrol.

However, the merger remains subject to approval by competition authorities before it can be finalized.

Sky Deutschland is considered one of the leading entertainment providers in the German-speaking world. Its offerings include live sports, movies, TV series, children’s programming, documentaries, and a variety of entertainment formats.
