A safety zone will be established around the location in preparation for the operation.
A walker using a metal detector found the explosive device and immediately notified the police. Experts from the ordnance disposal unit have since been preparing for the detonation, which is expected to take place in the afternoon.
Safety Zone Set and Evacuation Required for Nearby Buildings
According to the Lower Bavaria Police Headquarters, the tank mine cannot be safely moved, making on-site neutralization necessary. A police spokesperson, Günther Tomaschko, told Bayerischer Rundfunk that there was no immediate danger to local residents.
The originally planned evacuation radius of 350 meters was slightly reduced by experts. “Based on the current assessment, we expect that fewer than 500 people will need to leave their homes or workplaces,” Tomaschko said. The popular Peb leisure pool will also remain closed for the time being, as it falls within the restricted zone.
Walker Discovered Explosive Device with Metal Detector
The man who found the mine had been walking through the forest with a metal detector when he came across the dangerous object. Police believe the explosive device is likely a remnant from World War II.
Emergency services are now making detailed preparations to detonate the mine under strict safety conditions. The exact time of the controlled explosion has not yet been determined but is expected sometime during the afternoon.
