The pilots issued a priority message, resulting in a precautionary landing at the airport of the Bavarian capital.
As a spokesperson for the airline told the German Press Agency (dpa), a technical defect had been identified during the flight, though no details were initially provided about the exact nature of the issue. Additionally, a suspicious smell resembling smoke was detected in the passenger cabin, prompting the flight crew to divert to Munich. The aircraft landed safely without incident. The news portal T-Online had previously reported on the event.
No Official Mayday Emergency Declared
The affected aircraft, an Airbus A320, had originally departed from London Gatwick Airport. Its intended destination was the popular Greek holiday island of Santorini, where it was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday afternoon. According to EasyJet, while a smell of smoke was noticed in the cabin, no visible smoke was observed. Therefore, the pilots issued only a priority message rather than an official Mayday emergency call, which is reserved for situations involving imminent danger to passengers and crew.
As confirmed by EasyJet, emergency services were on standby at Munich Airport as a precautionary and standard safety measure following the aircraft’s landing. The affected passengers were able to continue their journey to Santorini later that evening aboard a replacement aircraft.
