These works will lead to significant weekend service changes on the U2 and U8 lines over the summer and early autumn months.
Essential Renovations Prompt Partial Line Closures
The modernization project, spearheaded by the Munich Transport Company (MVG) and Stadtwerke München (SWM), targets the aging wall panels at Giesing and Karl-Preis-Platz stations. Built over 40 years ago, the station interiors are showing signs of wear and require structural updates. The project begins in June with the removal and refurbishment of wall coverings, followed by the application of a temporary protective layer.
To carry out the work, U-Bahn service between Giesing and Innsbrucker Ring will be limited to a single track on nine weekends between June and September. These service adjustments will occur from 10:30 p.m. on Friday until the end of operations on Sunday.
Adjusted Timetables and Alternative Routes for Passengers
During these weekends, the U2 will run as follows:
- Between Feldmoching and Giesing, trains will continue every 10 minutes.
- Between Messestadt Ost and Innsbrucker Ring, the U2 will alternate between 5- and 15-minute intervals. Every second train will divert via the U5 route and continue to Westendstraße, maintaining access to key connections at Hauptbahnhof, Odeonsplatz (U3/U6), and S-Bahn stations like Ostbahnhof and Karlsplatz/Stachus.
The U8 line will be shortened and operate only between Olympiazentrum and Sendlinger Tor. For travel beyond Sendlinger Tor to Neuperlach Zentrum, passengers are advised to transfer to the U2 or U5.
On Pentecost Monday (June 9), the restricted service will extend through to the end of Monday’s operations. For Corpus Christi (June 19), changes will begin early on the preceding Wednesday evening, June 18, at 10:30 p.m.
Long-Term Upgrades with Minimal Passenger Impact
The initial phase, involving the dismantling and refurbishment of the station walls, is expected to conclude by mid-September. Full redesign work will then continue until late October but will be limited to off-hours to avoid further disruptions.
MVG and SWM plan to introduce a refreshed color scheme that retains each station’s visual identity while incorporating sustainable design principles. Wherever possible, existing materials will be reused to minimize environmental impact.
Passengers are encouraged to consult updated schedules and plan alternative routes ahead of the affected weekends to avoid delays. These temporary adjustments are part of a long-term commitment to ensuring the safety, functionality, and appearance of Munich’s U-Bahn system.
