Robert Prevost Becomes First American Pope, Takes the Name Leo XIV

The Catholic Church has elected a new pope, marking a historic first: Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old clergyman from the United States, was announced as the new head of the Church under the papal name Leo XIV. Addressing the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square with the words “Peace be with you all,” the new pontiff was welcomed with jubilant cheers and global celebration.

Prevost’s election represents a groundbreaking moment in Church history, as he is the first American to ascend to the papacy. His appointment was formally declared on Thursday evening by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, signaling a new era for the Roman Catholic Church, which counts approximately 1.4 billion members worldwide.

At 6:08 p.m. local time, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel — the traditional sign that a new pope has been chosen. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, Prevost secured the necessary votes by the fourth ballot of the conclave.

Leo XIV Delivers Peace Message in First Appearance

In his first public appearance on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with a message of unity and peace: “La pace sia con tutti voi” (“Peace be with you all”). The crowd erupted in applause, chants of “Viva il Papa,” and a sea of waving flags representing nations from every continent. Among them, a rainbow-colored umbrella stood out as a symbol of the diverse support gathered in the square.

Security was tight around Vatican City. St. Peter’s Square was cordoned off, traffic was redirected, and aerial surveillance was conducted by helicopters and drones to ensure public safety during the announcement.

Conclave Held Following the Death of Pope Francis

The conclave began on Wednesday afternoon following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday. A total of 133 cardinal electors entered the Sistine Chapel, secluded from the public, to choose the next leader of the Catholic Church.

Prevost’s election as Leo XIV marks a turning point for the Vatican. For the first time in its long history, a pope from the United States will lead the global Catholic community, signaling potential shifts in emphasis and perspective within the Church’s highest office.
