The large-scale restriction of movement on one of Europe’s main transit arteries will inevitably trigger a chain reaction in the transport system of border regions. The readiness of rescue and municipal units for rapid response will be a key factor in minimizing negative consequences for logistics and ensuring the safety of citizens caught in the traffic crisis zone.
In connection with the upcoming closure of the Brenner Autobahn, the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) has declared the first level of readiness. Local branches in Rosenheim, Traunstein, and Miesbach have detailed action plans for various scenarios that may arise during severe traffic disruptions.
The focus of the coordinators is not limited to emergency medical assistance. Standard social services that do not require the use of special signals — such as the maintenance of home emergency call systems, delivery of ready meals, and outpatient care — may also suffer if traffic flows come to a complete standstill, which requires specialists to adjust their schedules well in advance.
Thirteen-Kilometer Traffic Jam on the A93 Autobahn
Already on Friday midday, traffic movement on the A93 autobahn in the southern direction slowed down significantly. According to a representative of the ADAC automobile club, a traffic jam about 13 kilometers long formed between the Inntal interchange and the Kiefernsfelden border crossing. Motorists had to budget approximately one hour more than the usual travel time, which triggered an increased load on the adjacent road network.
If the predicted major traffic jams occur on Saturday during the closure of the route through the Brenner Pass, emergency provision of drinking water and other necessary assistance to drivers and passengers blocked en route may be required. To accomplish this complex task, it is planned to deploy specialized motorcycle units of the Bavarian Red Cross, which are capable of moving effectively even in conditions of dense traffic jams.
The monitoring of the situation is conducted continuously. The Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) clarified that specific operational measures will be carried out in strict coordination with local civil defense and disaster protection authorities. The first level of readiness is the initial one out of three existing levels. It provides for the mandatory verification of emergency communication channels, technical equipment, and the availability of individual units for rapid response.
ADAC Representatives Plan to Distribute Water and Toys
Police officers and staff of the ADAC automobile club have already taken up initial strategic positions. To promptly monitor the situation on the roads on the day of the mass departure of motorists, the ADAC regional branch for South Bavaria has dispatched a special team of consultants. It includes three specialists on motorcycles, a coordinating car, and an aerial surveillance aircraft, which will allow for the acquisition of precise data on traffic jams in real time.
At the same time, representatives of the organization note that the usual recommendations regarding detour routes will prove ineffective for drivers this time. Due to the official ban on exiting the autobahn when traffic jams occur, motorists will have to remain in the general convoy. To support travelers, the consultants are carrying humanitarian supplies of drinking water, as well as toys for young children.
The police of the southern districts of Bavaria have preemptively increased the size of duty shifts. “We have deployed the maximum possible number of personnel to service,” reported an official spokesperson for the Police Headquarters of Southern Upper Bavaria. He emphasized that the main task is to ensure the advancement of transport and strictly control the preservation of a clear lane for emergency services so that, if necessary, help can arrive at the scene of an incident in a timely manner. These measures have become the largest transport operation in the entire history of this police unit.
The reason for the closure of the autobahn through the Brenner Pass was a planned mass protest action. About 15,000 residents of the Wipptal valley intend to protest against the high noise level, air pollution with fine dust, and other negative factors caused by the constant increase in the density of the transit traffic flow.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the upcoming closure of the Brenner Pass will be a serious test for the entire transport infrastructure of the region, revealing the degree of coordination between agencies in a crisis situation. The unprecedented scale of mobilization of forces from the police, the ADAC automobile club, and the Bavarian Red Cross demonstrates the readiness of the services to protect the interests of citizens. Nevertheless, the successful overcoming of the logistical disruption will depend on the discipline of the drivers themselves, who need to take the introduced restrictions into account and strictly observe the rules for keeping an emergency lane clear.
