The Munich Transport Company (MVG) and the federal company Autobahn GmbH have approved a detailed plan for the demolition of a bridge in the Laim district, which will lead to serious consequences for automobile traffic in Munich: the A96 autobahn will be completely closed to traffic for several days. This major construction project represents an important stage in the development of the city’s tram network; however, its practical implementation will have a direct impact on both transit logistical flows and the daily life of residents in nearby neighborhoods.
In the coming days, the first preparatory works for the demolition of the overpass that runs above the A96 autobahn will begin on Fürstenrieder Straße. Munich City Utilities (SWM) will perform the demolition and subsequent engineering upgrade of the bridge as part of the realization of the Western Tram Line project (Tram-Westtangente) jointly with the federal company Autobahn GmbH, as officially reported by representatives of the Munich Transport Company (MVG).
Full Closure of the A96 Autobahn in Munich-Laim
Construction works at this facility will be carried out on a round-the-clock basis, including holidays and weekends. The main task of the construction crews is to fully restore automobile traffic on the autobahn by the start of the morning rush hour on Monday.
The management of the transport department coordinated these measures in advance with the Munich administration and a special noise protection service. Munich City Utilities (SWM) have scheduled the full closure of traffic on the A96 for the period from 22:00 on Wednesday, June 3, until 05:00 on Monday, June 8.
Provision of Hotel Rooms for Munich Residents
Due to the continuous nature of the construction process and the high noise level predicted by experts during the works, Munich City Utilities (SWM) will offer residents of nearby houses temporary accommodation in hotels for the entire period of the facility’s demolition. According to information from the Munich Transport Company, utility workers will notify citizens of this step on an individual basis using special letters delivered to mailboxes. Munich City Utilities (SWM) and the federal company Autobahn GmbH asked the local population in advance to treat these necessary procedures with understanding.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the upcoming closure of the A96 autobahn will be a serious test for Munich’s transport system; however, this step is necessary for the global improvement of the transport infrastructure in the long term. Harmonious coordination between municipal structures, timely individual information of citizens, and the provision of compensatory accommodation to residents of the noise zone demonstrate a high level of process organization. The project management expects that the round-the-clock schedule will allow the demolition to be completed within the set timeframes without disrupting the morning traffic schedule at the beginning of the work week.
