This Many E-Cars Are Registered in Munich

Only two federal states in Germany have a higher proportion of electric cars than Bavaria. Particularly, the city of Munich and the surrounding district stand out positively.

In Munich, one out of every 20 registered cars is now fully electric. This is the result of a new study by the car parts online shop “Motointegrator” in cooperation with the data studio “DataPulse Research”. According to the study, 40,456 electric cars are registered in the Bavarian capital – representing 5.28 percent of all vehicles.

In a nationwide comparison, Munich ranks fifth, according to the study. The frontrunner is Wolfsburg, with an e-car share of 9.05 percent. Following behind are Wiesbaden (8.15 percent), Ingolstadt (7.24 percent), and the district of Munich (6.71 percent). As of January 1, 2025, a total of 16,527 electric vehicles were registered in the Munich district.

Bavaria ranks third nationwide

Among the German federal states, Hamburg leads with a share of 4.39 percent, followed by Baden-Württemberg (3.85 percent) and Bavaria (3.78 percent). The states with the lowest percentages are Saxony (1.76 percent), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (1.65 percent), and Saxony-Anhalt (1.58 percent).

Compared to 2024, when the abrupt end of the government’s environmental bonus caused e-car sales to plummet by 27.4 percent, the market has slightly recovered in the first quarter of 2025, according to the analysis. Nationwide, 3.35 percent of all vehicles are currently fully electric – amounting to 1.65 million cars in absolute numbers.

Charging infrastructure in Bavaria still has room for improvement

According to the study, Bavaria’s charging network still has significant room for improvement. Currently, there are 10.2 vehicles per charging station – the seventh-highest ratio in Germany. The eastern federal states have the best ratio of charging stations to electric vehicles. However, this is partly because significantly fewer fully electric cars (1.82 percent) are on the road there compared to the western states (3.43 percent).

For their study, “Motointegrator” and “DataPulse Research” stated they primarily used official statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt). These included figures on new registrations, total vehicle stock, regional distributions, and market shares.
