Bavaria — the flood situation in Bavaria has significantly complicated by the beginning of the week, especially in the northern part. Rain and melting snow may lead to flooding in the city and district of Coburg, as well as in the districts of Kronach and Lichtenfels. The Bavarian Flood Information Service (HND) confirmed in its operational report a winter flood in Northern Bavaria, where alert levels 1 and 2 have been recorded in many places, and in some, level 3 has already been reached. The agency names the Bavarian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains as the main hotspots. Simultaneously, the service indicates that river bank overflows or flooding are possible in all Franconian administrative districts, as well as in the Upper Palatinate and parts of Swabia.
Water levels clearly demonstrate the dynamics
A look at the indicators of individual measuring stations emphasizes the seriousness of the situation: at the Cham / Regen station, the last value on Monday morning was 197 centimeters — the third alert level starts there from 195 centimeters. At the Hameraau / Regen station, 454 centimeters were recorded at the same time, which means exceeding the second level (from 450 centimeters). At the Kötzting / Weißer Regen station, the water level was at 180 centimeters, which is also above the second level (from 170 centimeters).
In the northern part of Upper Franconia and in Swabia, a noticeable rise is also observed: on the Steinach river in Fürth am Berg, the service recorded 267 centimeters, with the third level at 250 centimeters. On the Wörnitz river in Harburg, a figure of 361 centimeters was registered — this corresponds to the second level (from 350 centimeters), while the third level starts from 400 centimeters. The general Bavarian report on this matter explicitly stated that in the lower reaches of the Wörnitz in Harburg, water continues to arrive within the second level; whether the third level will be reached remains unclear for now.
Official warnings for built-up areas in several districts
Official warnings from the service regarding the threat of flooding of built-up areas are already in effect for a number of regions. According to the current data of the agency, this applies, among others, to the district of Cham, the city and district of Bayreuth, the districts of Lichtenfels and Kronach, as well as the city and district of Coburg. In the warning texts, a combination of precipitation and snowmelt is indicated as the reason. Regarding Cham, the responsible Regensburg Water Management Office additionally reported that the water level there has already reached the third mark; the fourth level, according to current estimates, is not expected. For the Weißer Regen river (including Kötzting), on the contrary, the reaching of a peak is predicted soon — a further strong rise to the third level is not anticipated at the moment.
In parallel, in extensive parts of Northern Bavaria, other warnings about river overflows and flooding continue to be in force — for example, in additional districts belonging to the zones of responsibility of the water management offices of Kronach and Hof. This corresponds to the general assessment of the service, according to which the flood situation is not limited to individual points but is distributed over a significant part of Northern Bavaria.
Passau again under observation — so far with preliminary notification
In Passau, the situation has also again come into view: a preliminary notification about the threat of flooding has been issued for the city and district of Passau. According to the warning text of the Deggendorf Water Management Office, the water level at the Vilshofen on the Danube station should exceed the first mark in the evening and continue to grow. At the Passau on the Danube and Passau-Ilzstadt stations, a rise to the first level is also expected on Wednesday night.
To understand the danger categories: the service distinguishes four alert levels — from the first (small overflows) to the fourth (large flooding of built-up areas and the need for large-scale protective measures). For the current situation, the transition from the second to the third level is decisive, as in this case built-up plots, basements, or important transport routes may be affected.
Compared to Northern Bavaria, the situation in most districts of Southern Bavaria still remains calm. However, the agency emphasizes that the development of events there continues to be monitored — the main hotspots may shift depending on the occurrence of precipitation. For the southeastern part of Bavaria, this means the preservation of relative calm with close observation of the further development of the situation.Source: Rosenheim24
