A second before catastrophe: In Upper Bavaria, a train was directed onto an occupied track due to a signal box failure

Near Weidenbach on the Munich — Mühldorf line, a dangerous situation arose. Railway employees prevented a collision at the last second.

Erding/Dorfen — the winter that arrived at the end of the week led to transport disruptions. Thus, starting from Friday afternoon, one of the city train sets was stuck at the Altenerding station. On the S-Bahn line, due to damage to the overhead contact network between Erding and Markt Schwaben, movement temporarily stopped completely. According to railway information, repair work concluded on Saturday around 2:00 PM.

Danger of collision near Weidenbach in the Mühldorf district

Significantly more serious consequences than simple delays or the use of replacement transport nearly occurred on Friday morning on the Munich — Mühldorf railway line at the level of Weidenbach in the Mühldorf district. Approximately 15 kilometers east of Dorfen, a Südostbayernbahn train at about 9:00 AM was mistakenly directed onto a section of track that was occupied. This information was confirmed by a railway representative in response to an inquiry from our newspaper.

Material damage or injuries among people were avoided. The consequences were temporary delays and train cancellations on the route between Munich and Mühldorf. We are currently conducting an investigation into what happened, explained a representative of the department. In connection with the ongoing proceedings, the concern cannot yet provide additional details.

An investigation into the incident is underway

According to preliminary information, the cause was a failure in the operation of the signal box. The entire distance of the track still remains single-track, which is planned to be changed within the framework of the ABS38 expansion project. In the Weidenbach area, moreover, very old traffic control systems are still operated. The question from our editorial office as to whether the winter weather could have had a relation to the malfunction remained unanswered for now.

According to the broadcasting company Bayerischer Rundfunk, the railway representative specified that the company classified what happened as a dangerous event. According to this report, railway workers were able to prevent a collision literally at the last moment.
