Railway Line in Upper Bavaria to Close Completely for Six Weeks Due to Repairs

Deutsche Bahn is renovating the tracks between Munich-Riem and Markt Schwaben. From May to mid-June, passengers will need to switch to replacement bus services.

Markt Schwaben — Between May and mid-June, the S-Bahn section between Munich-Riem and Markt Schwaben will be completely paralyzed. As reported by Merkur reporter Josef Ametsbichler, public transport users in the region are facing a challenging spring, with several railway sections in the Ebersberg district set for closure.

The primary disruption stems from track renovations between Munich-Riem and Markt Schwaben, meaning no regional or S-Bahn trains will run from May 1 to June 15. Additionally:

  • The Markt Schwaben – Mühldorf line will be fully closed during the Easter and Pentecost holidays for control system upgrades.
  • The Filzenexpress route between Ebersberg and Wasserburg will cease operations for one week to allow for track ballast cleaning.

Full Closure in May and June: Details Still Pending

The six-week shutdown between Munich-Riem and Markt Schwaben will be a major test for thousands of commuters. A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn confirmed the plans: “We are looking at a full six-week closure with the implementation of replacement bus services.”

Precisely how the bus schedule will be organized and how much travel time will increase remains unknown. Deutsche Bahn stated that the fine details are still being worked out. For residents of Poing, Markt Schwaben, and neighboring communities traveling toward Munich or Mühldorf, this means a state of uncertainty until further notice.

In addition to the Munich-bound restrictions, the Markt Schwaben – Mühldorf line will be fully closed from March 27 to April 13 and from May 22 to June 8—periods coinciding with the school holidays. These closures are necessary to update signaling interlockings. Passengers should also expect further restrictions on the weekends of April 18 and April 27. Consequently, the spring of 2026 is shaping up to be exceptionally construction-heavy for the Munich – Mühldorf route.

Filzenexpress: Weed Removal Paralyzes Traffic

Users of the Filzenexpress route are also facing inconveniences. The segment between Ebersberg and Wasserburg will be closed from Monday, April 20, to Monday, April 27. The reason for the closure is that the track ballast must be cleared of vegetation. Deutsche Bahn has not yet specified the exact impact on train times, as detailed information is currently in preparation.
