Every 40 Minutes to Munich Airport: S-Bahn Service Restricted Due to Short-Term Construction

The Munich S-Bahn is facing further disruptions: due to short-term construction work, S8 trains toward the airport are currently running only every 40 minutes.

Munich East — Passengers planning to travel to Munich Airport via the S-Bahn today should check their routes in advance. Due to urgent construction, the S8 line is operating on a reduced 40-minute frequency to and from the airport.

S-Bahn Munich: Switch Malfunction Disrupts Airport Service

According to Deutsche Bahn, service on the line had to be restricted due to a faulty switch. From approximately 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, S8 trains between Leuchtenbergring and the Airport ran only once every 40 minutes.

During this period, the following trains operated the full route from Herrsching to the Airport:

  • S8 Herrsching dep. 08:25 → Airport arr. 09:55
  • S8 Herrsching dep. 09:05 → Airport arr. 10:35
  • S8 Herrsching dep. 09:45 → Airport arr. 11:15
  • S8 Herrsching dep. 10:25 → Airport arr. 11:55
  • S8 Herrsching dep. 11:05 → Airport arr. 12:35

A return to the standard 20-minute frequency on the S8 was planned to begin with the 11:45 AM departure from Herrsching and the 1:24 PM departure from the Airport.

Alternative Routes Also Affected

Until service normalized, DB advised passengers to use the S1 line as an alternative for airport travel. However, that line also faced complications: animals on the tracks between Oberschleißheim and Neufahrn caused delays of 10 to 15 minutes. In some instances, individual trips were canceled entirely.

Currently, the Munich rail network is experiencing numerous restrictions due to ongoing construction, particularly during nighttime and weekend hours when many services are being suspended.
