Basketball: German Cup Final Round to be Hosted in Munich

The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) "Final Four" has finally found a permanent home—at least for three years. However, this is not a cause for celebration for everyone.

The final round of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) Cup will be held at the SAP Garden complex in Munich for the next three years. On February 21 and 22, 2026, the BMA365 Bamberg Baskets, Alba Berlin, EWE Baskets Oldenburg, and the hosts, FC Bayern Basketball, will compete for the first title of the season in the 11,500-seat arena.

The Cup winner will also be determined in Munich in 2027 and 2028. BBL CEO Stefan Holz noted: “By deciding to hold the Final Four for three years at one permanent location, we are opening a new and exciting chapter in the history of German basketball.”

He added that starting with the 2026 final tournament, the Final Four will be raised to a new level, and the brand itself, according to Holz, will develop in the coming years.

Dispute with Düsseldorf

However, a dispute arose before the decision, as the BBL had initially concluded a long-term contract for the period from 2027 to 2029 with the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf. But the clubs overwhelmingly voted against that deal. The affected Düsseldorf event management company, D.LIVE, subsequently announced that it would initiate legal proceedings.

Until recently, the Cup final round always took place in the arena of one of the four semi-finalists. However, because these were only known a few weeks before the final tournament, there were constantly problems with arena availability. The league therefore decided to choose a permanent venue for several years.
