Berlin/Munich – Google will invest €5.5 billion over the next four years to expand its operations in Germany – with funds also flowing to Munich. The internet giant plans to restore and modernize the former post office building in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district, as announced by Google Germany’s chief, Philipp Justus, on Tuesday (November 11) in Berlin.
Historic Munich Post Office Building to be Modernized
The historic building complex will be transformed into a modern research center with 30,000 square meters of office space for up to 1,500 employees. The Bavarian capital, where Google already employs over 1,000 developers, thus strengthens its position as one of the company’s key innovation hubs in Germany.
Upon completion at the end of 2026, the Arnulfpost building project will include public spaces accessible to all Munich residents. The investment in Munich is part of Google’s largest investment program in Germany to date, which will run from 2026 to 2029. In addition to Munich, it includes the construction of a new data center in Dietzenbach, Hesse, and the expansion of an existing data center in nearby Hanau.
This is Exactly What We Need Right Now?!
Munich’s significance as a tech hub is underscored by other major investments. Just last week, Deutsche Telekom and the US AI chip developer Nvidia announced joint investments of around one billion euros in a Munich data center. This trend demonstrates how strongly the Bavarian metropolis is benefiting from the cloud services and AI applications boom.
Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD) welcomed Google’s plans as “real investments in the future: in innovation, artificial intelligence, carbon-neutral transformation, and jobs in Germany.” He added: “This is exactly what we need right now.” The corporation expects that the overall program will “likely support approximately 9,000 jobs annually in Germany until 2029.”
Other German Locations Also to be Expanded
In addition to Munich, Google’s sites in Frankfurt and Berlin will also be expanded. Digital Minister Carsten Wildberger (CDU) emphasized: “We want to make Germany Europe’s leading location for data centers.” The announced investments demonstrate Germany’s attractiveness for digital infrastructure development.
Growing demand for cloud services and increased use of AI applications are driving business for Google and other tech corporations like Microsoft, Amazon, as well as local providers including Schwarz-Gruppe, Ionos, and Deutsche Telekom. According to data from the industry association Bitkom, data center operators in Germany are investing around twelve billion euros this year.
