Munich Airport Christmas Market Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Munich – For some, it's the time of year to relax with friends over a glass of mulled wine and try their hand at ice stock curling.

For others, the weeks before Christmas are synonymous with escaping to warmer places. Starting Friday, November 14, visitors and passengers at Munich Airport can have both. That’s when the traditional Christmas market kicks off at the airport in Erdinger Moos. And it has a record to offer, too.

Munich Airport Christmas Market Starts – Featuring Large Ice Rink and Fir Forest

This year marks the 25th time the Christmas and Winter Market is being held at the Munich Airport Center (MAC). From November 14 to December 28, travelers, visitors, and employees can linger and enjoy the atmosphere. Alongside a festively decorated fir forest, cozy huts, and twinkling lights, visitors to the Christmas market can once again expect the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds this year.

According to the airport, there will be approximately 40 stalls in total, offering handmade gift ideas, culinary specialties, and winter treats from the region. A special highlight is the 600-square-meter ice rink, where visitors can go ice skating and try ice stock curling.

Airport Christmas Market: St. Nicholas Distributes Sweets, “Wishing Tree” Campaign in Early December

Throughout the market’s duration, there will be an extensive program with diverse entertainment offerings, the airport announced. Activities include, among others, Advent wreath making and Christmas bauble decorating. St. Nicholas will distribute sweets to children on three separate days (November 27, December 6, and December 19).

This year also sees the inaugural “Wishing Tree” campaign at the airport Christmas market. On December 6 and 7, numerous wish lists from children affiliated with charitable and social organizations will be hung on a festively decorated wishing tree. “Visitors to the Christmas and Winter Market can fulfill these children’s wishes by taking a wish list from the tree, purchasing the gift, and dropping it off at the ‘Elchstube’ by December 18,” the airport explained. Further charity events will also take place.

Christkindlmarkt at Munich Airport – Live Music and “Lichterfahrten” (Light Tours)

In the evenings, the airport Christmas market will feature live performances by local artists from the region. The musical variety ranges from rock, pop, funk, and Italo to swing, Latin, gospel, and modern folk music, according to the airport. Those wishing to experience the airport’s sea of lights after dark can participate in the Christmas “Lichterfahrten” (light tours). These last about 50 minutes and start at the Lichterfahrten hut located directly on the Christmas market grounds.

Munich Airport Transforms into a Winter Paradise – Opening Hours Overview

The winter market at Munich Airport is open daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. However, on Christmas Eve (December 24), the Christmas market closes early at 4:00 PM. Admission is free. Parking is free for the first hour. Discounted parking is available for up to three hours. Time slots for the ice rink and the light tours can be booked online in advance.

Munich Airport Christmas Market Holds a Special Record

The Christmas market at Munich Airport takes place in a special and record-worthy location. The approximately 10,000-square-meter open-air area of the MAC Forum is the largest covered open-air space in Europe. This means you can linger here even in rain or snow. Furthermore, many other Christkindl markets are taking place in Munich.
