This major east-west motorway will be fully closed on two separate weekends, with extensive construction work making significant disruptions unavoidable.
Key Information:
The A8 between Mühlhausen and Merklingen will be fully closed twice.
The closures are scheduled for October 17-20 and October 31-November 3.
Large-scale diversions via the A6 and A7 motorways are in place.
The Autobahn GmbH is announcing severe restrictions: the A8 towards Munich will be completely closed between Mühlhausen im Täle and Merklingen from October 17 (9:00 PM) to October 20 (5:00 AM). The second weekend closure follows from October 31 (9:00 PM) to November 3 (5:00 AM).
The reason for the multi-day closures is extensive work on the road surface, bridges, and guardrails on one of Germany’s most important traffic arteries. While the descent from the Swabian Alb towards Stuttgart and Karlsruhe will remain passable, drivers heading to Munich must prepare for massive detours.
For long-distance travel, the Autobahn GmbH has established a large-scale diversion starting at the Weinsberg interchange. This route leads via the A6 and A7 back to the A8 towards Munich—or alternatively via the A7 towards Füssen.
Regional traffic can divert from Wendlingen via the B313 and B10 to the A8 at Ulm-West. For local journeys, the official route from Mühlhausen leads via the B466 and B10 (U29) to the A8 at Ulm-West, and via the L1230 to Merklingen.
