Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has ordered the removal of the 30 km/h speed limit on the section of the Middle Ring (Mittlerer Ring) near Landshuter Allee. According to the city administration, this decision aims to improve traffic flow, as air pollutant levels have now fallen below the maximum permissible limits. Consequently, a speed limit of 50 km/h will once again be permitted on this stretch.
A forecast commissioned by the city predicts that the annual average nitrogen dioxide level for 2026 will be 35 micrograms per cubic meter. The annual average for 2025 has already reached 38 micrograms, which was below the legal limit. Reiter emphasized that the measure should optimize traffic movement, explaining: “It was important to me from the start that we act prudently with such measures and do not maintain restrictions longer than necessary.”
CSU Demanded Return to 50 km/h
The 30 km/h speed limit was part of a package of measures that also included driving bans for older diesel vehicles to improve air quality. The lifting of the limit comes shortly before the municipal elections in March, where the topic is playing a role in the campaign. The CSU party had previously demanded a return to the 50 km/h limit to optimize traffic flow.
The outlook for the coming months indicates that city authorities will continue to monitor air quality to ensure that established limits are maintained.
