Russian Orthodox Community Builds Wooden Church in Bogenhausen

The Russian Orthodox community in Bogenhausen is constructing its own place of worship.

The church building on Knappertsbuschstraße is being made entirely of wood.

Munich – Construction of a distinctive church begins

In Bogenhausen, construction has begun on a remarkable church: a wooden place of worship in the characteristic Russian style is being built on Knappertsbuschstraße. The structure is assembled from prefabricated wooden elements, similar to Canadian wooden houses, and is currently being put together directly on-site.

Tower planned to reach 20 meters

The plans call for a total usable floor space of 150 square meters, an overall height of eight meters, and a church tower that will reach 20 meters at its highest point. The building permit was already granted in 2022. A foundation stone was laid in March 2023, but afterward there was little progress for a long period. Until then, the Resurrection of Christ congregation, which was founded in 1996, had been holding its services in a tent on the property, which it had purchased from the Catholic Church in 2010.

Financing provided entirely by the Russian Orthodox community

The Russian Orthodox community is covering the full cost of construction. Donations have been collected for this purpose since 2015. Financial reasons are considered the most likely cause for the delays. According to official statements from the city, interruptions in construction were entirely due to the community’s own decisions.

District committee demands clarification on building permit

The Bogenhausen district committee has called for an update on the existing building permit. According to the SPD parliamentary group, it remains unclear how earlier concerns regarding the building’s height, necessary tree removals, and street layout were addressed.

Replacement plantings for removed trees

The city’s planning department stated that all parking spaces required in connection with the chapel have been documented on the property. For the tree removals stipulated in the permit, replacement plantings have been planned on the site.
