The 60-year-old was on the Gehrengrat trail with companions when she slipped on a narrow section and fell 200 meters into a rocky ravine.
According to Austrian police, the woman from Lower Franconia lost her footing in front of her companions’ eyes and plunged down the steep terrain.
First responders unable to save her
Witnesses immediately climbed down to reach her, but the emergency doctor who arrived by helicopter could only pronounce her dead. Two men and a woman from Germany, who had been hiking with her, were flown down to the valley.
The Gehrengrat route in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg is considered a difficult and demanding trail.
