ADAC Expects Heavy Traffic on Highways This Weekend

This weekend, roads in Bavaria are expected to be heavily congested. Summer holidays are ending in four German states, making traffic jams particularly likely for travelers heading north.

Those starting their vacations now may experience slightly better conditions.

Drivers in Bavaria should prepare for crowded highways and significant delays during the first September weekend. According to the ADAC, strong travel traffic is expected on popular vacation routes heading south starting Friday afternoon due to favorable weather. However, northbound routes are likely to see the greatest congestion because of the end of the holidays in several states.

Highways particularly affected: A8, A9, and A93

According to ADAC traffic forecasts, stretches with the highest risk of congestion include:

A3 between Passau and Cologne

A8 between Salzburg, Munich, and Karlsruhe

A9 from Munich to Berlin

Other heavily trafficked routes are expected on the A93 between Kufstein and the Inntal Triangle, as well as on all highways around Munich. Traffic will likely peak Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Sunday afternoon. Travelers are advised to consider alternative routes or travel on different days if possible.

Holiday-end traffic amplifies congestion

Key reasons for the expected heavy traffic include the end of summer holidays in four German and five Austrian states, the conclusion of the seasonal Saturday truck ban, and more than 1,200 ongoing construction projects nationwide.

During the remainder of the Bavarian summer holidays, weekend driving restrictions apply in certain towns along the A8 between Munich and Salzburg, and on the A93 between Rosenheim and Kufstein. Travelers attempting to bypass traffic via secondary roads may be redirected back to the highway by police.

Border crossings expected to see delays

ADAC also warns of heavy traffic at border crossings. Long wait times are expected at Suben (A3), Walserberg (A8), and Kiefersfelden (A93), particularly for returning travelers.

Delays are expected beyond Germany as well. Many vacationers returning from Italy face bottlenecks on Austria’s Brenner Autobahn near the Lueg Bridge due to lane closures from construction. Similar exit restrictions apply on the Inntal Autobahn A12 in Tyrol on weekends.
