The local coast guard confirmed to the German Press Agency (dpa) that the girl was from Gilching in the Starnberg district. On Tuesday evening, beachgoers found the child near the shore of a campsite in Grado, a town in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The town, located on the Gulf of Venice, is a popular destination for families because of its shallow beaches.
According to the newspaper Il Goriziano, beachgoers pulled the girl out of the water and brought her to shore after discovering her. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but resuscitation attempts on the beach were unsuccessful. The child was then flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where doctors were also unable to save her life.
The exact circumstances of the tragic incident remain unclear. Local authorities launched an investigation on Tuesday evening.
