A tragic accident occurred on Monday in the Ammergau Alps: A 58-year-old woman from the Augsburg district fell to her death while climbing the Große Klammspitze.

She plunged about 100 meters down a rocky ravine—any help came too late.

Fatal Climb: Woman Falls 100 Meters Down Rocky Gully

The woman was hiking with her 24-year-old son when she lost her balance for reasons still unknown. The accident happened on the southern side of the trail leading up to the 1,924-meter-high Große Klammspitze. She fell approximately 100 meters into a steep rocky gully. The impact was so severe that she died at the scene.

Son Calls for Help – Mountain Rescue and Police Respond

The son immediately alerted emergency services. A large-scale operation followed: Six volunteer members of the Oberammergau Mountain Rescue Service, three officers from the Alpine Task Force of the police, and a police helicopter were deployed. The helicopter was also used to recover the woman’s body.

Mountain Rescue Provides Specialized and Diverse Emergency Assistance

The Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service (Bergwacht Bayern) does much more than respond to mountain emergencies. In addition to traditional alpine rescues, its highly trained teams handle incidents in ski areas, technical rescues in inaccessible terrain such as caves and canyons, cable car accidents, and even provide psychosocial emergency support to victims and their families at the scene.

The Mountain Rescue Service also plays a critical role in disaster relief operations—especially in the Alps and Central Uplands, though they are available across Germany when needed. Moreover, the organization is deeply committed to protecting the natural and cultural landscapes of the alpine region.

Quiet Heroes Behind the Scenes

This tragic incident in the Ammergau Alps is a stark reminder of how quickly a mountain excursion can end in catastrophe—and of the vital work carried out by the many volunteers of the Mountain Rescue Service every single day. Despite their professionalism and experience, the mountains remain unpredictable, and even the best-prepared hikers are not immune to accidents.
