MVG Ends Bike-Sharing Program in Munich After Ten Years

Anyone in Munich who has relied on rental bikes from the Munich Transport Company (MVG) will soon have to look for alternatives: after a decade in operation, the MVG bike-sharing service is being shut down—at least temporarily.

MVG has announced that it will phase out its current bike rental system as planned. Over the coming weeks, the city’s fixed rental stations will be gradually dismantled. However, the bikes themselves will remain available for use via the MVGO app until the official end date of September 30. MVG is advising users to redeem any remaining free minutes before the service ends.

MVG Managing Director Ingo Wortmann issued a statement thanking all who used the service over the past ten years:

“We thank our customers for placing their trust in MVG Rad.”

New Bike-Sharing System in Development – Launch Date Still Uncertain

The end of MVG’s bike-sharing program does not mean that rental bikes will disappear from Munich permanently. Back in November 2023, the Munich City Council approved plans for a new, more comprehensive rental system. This upcoming service is intended to better integrate the city with its surrounding areas and improve overall mobility across the region.

However, when this new system will launch remains unclear. According to the city’s Mobility Department, a seamless transition from the current to the future system is currently not possible. The reason: an ongoing review procedure followed by a legal complaint from a losing bidder, which has now been submitted to the Higher Regional Court of Bavaria. These legal disputes are causing significant delays in the rollout of the new system.

Despite the uncertain timeline, the planned replacement aims to offer a significantly improved bike-sharing network in the long term—featuring more bikes, more stations, and tighter integration with public transportation.
