Train Disruptions in August: Cancellations and Rerouted Services Between Munich, Salzburg, and Kufstein

Extensive construction work will cause significant disruptions to rail services on several key routes in southern Bavaria this August.

Travelers on routes between Munich, Salzburg, and Kufstein should prepare for detours, train cancellations, and replacement bus services. These measures will affect both regional and long-distance train operations.

Rail Construction Between Rosenheim, Salzburg, and Kufstein to Impact Local and Long-Distance Services

Just in time for the start of summer holidays in Bavaria—when many people begin their vacation travels—rail traffic on some of the region’s main lines will be severely affected. Starting August 1, Deutsche Bahn will carry out construction on the Rosenheim–Salzburg and Rosenheim–Kufstein routes. As part of this project, heavily used overhead lines and rail infrastructure will be renewed. The construction is scheduled to continue until August 18.

Regional Services: Replacement Buses Introduced – Long-Distance Services: Reroutings and Cancellations

In regional rail services, Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) will operate a bus replacement service on the affected routes to maintain transport connections. However, passengers should expect significantly longer travel times and reduced comfort.

Long-distance services will also be heavily impacted. Until 6:00 a.m. on August 11, many trains to and from Vienna will be rerouted via Passau. In addition, some long-distance trains to and from Klagenfurt will be canceled. According to Deutsche Bahn, starting August 11, most long-distance trains between Munich and the cities of Venice and Bologna will also be suspended.

Deutsche Bahn is urging all passengers to check the latest schedules and possible alternative connections before starting their journey—either through the company’s app or website.

Overloaded Infrastructure – General Overhaul Planned for 2027

According to Deutsche Bahn, the infrastructure along these affected sections is currently heavily overloaded and prone to frequent disruptions. This has resulted in regular delays in normal operations. The current construction efforts are intended to improve the reliability of rail service in the region over the medium term.

In the long run, a full-scale renovation is planned for the heavily trafficked sections between Munich and Rosenheim, as well as Rosenheim and Salzburg. This general overhaul is expected to begin in 2027 and aims to ensure the long-term stability of these major rail corridors.
