Although final figures for oil and gas heating systems are still pending, preliminary indicators clearly suggest that heat pumps are growing in popularity among property owners—surpassing even the long-dominant gas boilers.
The German Heating Industry Association (BDH) and the German Heat Pump Association (BWP) reported that approximately 139,000 heat pumps were sold between January and June, marking a 55 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This signals a significant shift in the German heating market.
Especially Strong Growth in the Second Quarter
Sales were already on the rise in the first quarter, with a year-on-year increase of 35 percent. But from April onward, demand surged even more: In the second quarter alone, heat pump sales jumped 75 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
“Homeowners are now clearly choosing heat pumps,” said BWP Managing Director Martin Sabel. Many people now recognize that fossil fuels like oil and gas no longer represent a viable long-term option. “Fossil-based heating is not only harmful to the climate, but given the geopolitical situation, also subject to severe price and supply fluctuations,” Sabel added.
Industry Cautions: Heat Pump Success Relies on Stable Political Support
Despite the current boom, both BDH and BWP warn against complacency. The success of heat pumps is not guaranteed. What is crucial, they emphasize, is that the new federal government ensures reliable financial incentives for switching to climate-friendly heating systems and works to reduce public uncertainty.
The associations warn against “politically motivated interference” that could artificially boost demand for oil or gas heating systems. The transition to climate-friendly heating, they stress, can only succeed with a consistent and long-term political strategy.
