Hiker Dies After Falling 100 Meters During Descent Near Königssee

A fatal mountain accident occurred on Sunday in the Berchtesgadener Land region.

A 62-year-old hiker from Middle Franconia lost his life while descending from the Kärlingerhaus towards Königssee. His wife was rescued from the steep terrain by helicopter.

According to the police, the couple had set out early Sunday afternoon on the Sagerecksteig trail, a well-known but challenging route that leads downhill from the Kärlingerhaus through rugged terrain. While navigating a particularly steep section marked by a rocky gully, the man apparently lost his footing. He slipped and fell approximately 100 meters.

Despite the immediate response by rescue teams, the emergency physician who arrived at the scene was only able to pronounce the man dead. His injuries from the fall were so severe that no medical intervention could have saved him.

Helicopter Rescue for Spouse Conducted Under Difficult Conditions

The man’s wife, who had accompanied him on the hike, was airlifted from the remote area by a rescue helicopter. She was not physically injured but was visibly in shock. The rescue operation involved eleven mountain rescue personnel from the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau units. Due to the location and terrain, the mission was technically demanding and required a high level of expertise from the responders.

The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fall and reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
