In Munich’s Isarvorstadt district, the weekend of July 19 and 20 will once again bring a unique fusion of classical music, jazz, and pop to audiences in the Bavarian capital. The Gärtnerplatz Open Air invites visitors to enjoy free live music outdoors over two days.
What began as a small neighborhood festival has grown into a major event. In 2025, the festival area will be expanded by about one third, extending the celebration from Reichenbachplatz to the southern half of Gärtnerplatz. Alongside the long-standing partner Deutsche Eiche managing the northern section, the new co-organizer Die Krake will oversee the southern area. A new stage will be installed there, particularly to showcase young, emerging regional talents. Organizer Konstantin von Keyserlingk highlighted the significance of the expansion, noting that the festival will now offer three stage areas for the first time.
The expansion is motivated not only by programming ambitions but also financial considerations. Increasing security costs combined with declining sponsorships have posed challenges for the organizers. Von Keyserlingk explained that while commercializing the event and charging admission was an option, the decision was made to keep the festival free by seeking new partnerships instead. The larger festival grounds will also allow for additional food and beverage offerings, which could help balance expenses.
The musical lineup will begin Saturday afternoon with jazz performances. The main event that evening will be a concert by Malik Harris, who is scheduled to perform on the main stage at 8:15 p.m. Sunday’s program will be dedicated to the State Theater at Gärtnerplatz, featuring soloists and orchestra in a light and summery concert. A new feature this year is the “supporter ticket” for Sunday evening’s concert, which grants purchasers an exclusive seated area in front of the stage.
Beyond the music, Munich’s gastronomy scene will provide street food stands around the main stage to ensure visitors’ culinary needs are met. The festival grounds promise to transform into a lively hub of music, socializing, and enjoyment on both days, weather permitting.
