Under the motto “Voices of Diversity,” more than 12,000 singers from across the country are gathering for one of Germany’s largest vocal music events, featuring over 600 performances spanning a wide range of styles.
Nuremberg Becomes a City of Sound as 400 Choirs Arrive from Across Germany
From spontaneous singalongs to grand concert moments, the festival invites audiences of all ages to experience, explore, and participate in the full spectrum of choral music. Approximately 400 choirs from all parts of Germany have come together in Nuremberg to share their voices and celebrate musical community and human connection.
Performances Across the City in Both Historic and Community Venues
Concerts are being held at an impressive variety of venues—from cultural centers such as Kulturwerkstatt auf AEG to nursing homes and care facilities, and even historic landmarks like St. Sebald Church, the Congress Hall, and the storied Martha Church, once home to the original Meistersingers of Nuremberg.
Festival of Community and Human Connection
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, serving as the festival’s patron, referenced the tradition of the Meistersingers in his welcome message and expressed his hope for an inspiring and unifying event. Former Federal President Christian Wulff, now President of the German Choir Association, emphasized in his opening speech the essential role of listening, singing together, and interpersonal connection in today’s society.
Over 600 Events Reflect the Full Spectrum of Choral Music
The festival’s program, running through Sunday, includes more than 600 concerts, workshops, competitions, and participatory events. Spontaneous singing groups form throughout the city, showcasing the joy of shared musical experiences.
Audiences are treated to an expansive array of choral genres—from classical and modern compositions to gospel, pop, and world music. Daily “singalongs” invite visitors to join in, blurring the line between performer and audience. Most events are free and open to the public, with only the “Chorfest-Plus” concerts—featuring renowned ensembles—requiring a ticket.
Special Initiative Brings Bavarian Amateur Choirs Together with Sir Simon Rattle
A major highlight for local choirs is an exclusive participation project involving Sir Simon Rattle, the Bavarian Radio Choir, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. This initiative offers amateur choirs from across Bavaria a unique opportunity to perform with these world-class ensembles.
Approximately 10 to 20 selected choirs—chosen by a professional jury—will engage in workshops, rehearsals, and two public concerts. Around 500 singers in total are expected to take part. Eligible ensembles must be based in Bavaria, consist primarily of amateur singers, and demonstrate not perfection, but enthusiasm, expressiveness, musical openness, and a collaborative spirit.
Further information on how to apply for the program is available on the official German Choir Festival website.
