Warm Start to the Week Before Conditions Deteriorate
Tuesday, May 20, began with pleasant weather in Munich. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), temperatures are forecast to reach up to 21 degrees Celsius, with a mix of sunshine and clouds creating ideal conditions for outdoor activities. However, this mild spell will be short-lived. Thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Alps by the afternoon, and Munich itself is headed for a noticeable cooldown.
Rain and Cooler Temperatures Set to Arrive Midweek
The DWD forecasts that Wednesday will bring one more day of relatively mild temperatures in Munich, again peaking at around 21 degrees Celsius. However, the chance of rain is high, with wetter.com putting the probability at 90 percent. By Thursday, daytime highs will drop to just 16 degrees, and the rain will continue. Friday is expected to be even cooler, with maximum temperatures of only 15 degrees. Residents should prepare with rain gear and possibly light scarves to stay comfortable.
Alpine Thunderstorms Could Bring Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
While the city may initially be spared from severe weather, conditions in the Alps are expected to worsen today. The DWD warns of isolated thunderstorms in the Bavarian Alps during the afternoon and evening. These storms may bring intense rainfall—up to 20 liters per square meter within an hour—as well as small hail and gusts of wind reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour.
As of Tuesday morning, the DWD’s warning map showed no active weather alerts, with all regions marked in green. However, this status could change later in the day due to rising instability and moisture levels over the Alpine region, which are significantly higher compared to the rest of Bavaria.
With a shift toward unstable weather conditions in the region, residents of Munich and nearby areas are advised to stay updated on forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially if planning outdoor activities in the second half of the week.
