Lufthansa Flight Returns to Munich After Takeoff Due to Landing Gear System Alert

MUNICH — A Lufthansa flight bound for Warsaw made an unscheduled return to Munich Airport on Friday morning, shortly after departure, due to a technical alert involving the aircraft's landing gear system. While the incident prompted a safety check, passengers were never at risk.

Early Morning Turnaround After Takeoff

On May 16, 2025, Lufthansa flight LH 1610 departed Munich around 6 a.m. en route to Warsaw’s Frédéric Chopin Airport. The Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-900, operated by Lufthansa’s regional subsidiary CityLine, was in the air for less than an hour before pilots initiated a return to the airport.

The aircraft flew over the Erdinger Moos area near Munich, entering a controlled approach back to its point of origin.

Landing Gear Issue Triggers Safety Protocol

According to a Lufthansa spokesperson, the flight crew detected an irregular system reading related to the aircraft’s landing gear. Though likely a sensor error, the cockpit message led the crew to take precautionary measures.

To visually confirm the status of the gear, the pilots performed a low flyby near the control tower, where ground personnel visually inspected the landing gear from the ground.

Safe Landing Without Incident

The maneuver and subsequent landing were carried out without complications. “The aircraft landed safely, and at no point was there any danger to passengers or crew,” the Lufthansa spokesperson said. The airline emphasized that such visual inspections are standard procedure in cases involving system anomalies during flight.

Passengers Rebooked and Apology Issued

After the safe return, affected passengers were rebooked on alternative flights to Warsaw. Lufthansa apologized for the inconvenience and thanked travelers for their patience and understanding. The airline also confirmed that CityLine is reviewing the technical issue to prevent future disruptions.

While unexpected, the incident illustrates routine safety precautions that ensure operational integrity and passenger security remain paramount.
