According to a statement released by the Upper Bavaria police, the emergency dispatch center received a call reporting a man with a knife near the Altenerding S-Bahn station. When police officers arrived on the scene, the suspect advanced toward them with the weapon drawn. The officers initially attempted to de-escalate the situation by firing several warning shots into the air. However, when the man continued moving toward them, they responded with targeted shots, striking him in the leg.
The officers immediately provided first aid before the man, a 31-year-old German national, was transported to a hospital by emergency medical services. Authorities confirmed that his injuries are not life-threatening. Crime scene investigators remained at the location until late in the evening, and the Erding Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case to determine whether the suspect’s actions or the officers’ use of force have legal implications.
A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn reported that train services between Markt Schwaben and Erding were suspended for approximately three and a half hours. The disruption affected only the S2 line toward Munich.
The incident prompted a large-scale police response around 7:15 PM at the Altenerding station. Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots, which were later confirmed to have been fired by police officers. The intervention was prompted by a man wielding a knife who was considered a threat and needed to be subdued.
Eyewitnesses noted that officers attempted to board the train through the driver’s cabin to reach the suspect. Police units had already been stationed at Altenerding in anticipation of the train’s arrival. Initial reports indicated that the suspect was shot in the thigh before being taken away by ambulance. The station was subsequently sealed off, and all train traffic through the area was halted during the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to clarify the full circumstances of the incident.
