A Warning Has Been Published About Fraudulent Electronic Letters on Behalf of the PayPal Payment System

In the stream of daily electronic correspondence, users often discover messages demanding immediate action. Recently, cases of the distribution of phishing notifications on behalf of the popular service PayPal, containing demands for urgent data verification, have become more frequent.

The organizers of the mailings most likely calculate that the recipient will prefer to quickly go through the procedure to avoid restrictions in the future. The Consumer Protection Society has once again called the population to vigilance due to the activation of the fraudulent scheme, the implementation methods of which are becoming increasingly sophisticated. For in case of clicking on the links, users risk losing access to personal financial accounts.

In the subject field of such messages, it is usually written: “Security measures — confirm actions to avoid blocking.”

The authors of this text declare the necessity of conducting a profile check for security purposes. From the recipient, they demand to follow the specified link within 48 hours, threatening in the opposite case to suspend the servicing of the account.

The creation of an artificial time deficit is applied intentionally to induce a person to commit rash actions and bypass standard vigilance protocols.

Key signs allowing the recognition of an unreliable message

With a careful study of the text, one can discover several characteristic signs of deception.

In the letter, a personal address to the client by first and last name is absent — instead, general formulations are used.

In addition, the sender’s address, upon detailed consideration, has no relation to the real domains of the payment service.

The presence of a strictly limited timeframe for fulfilling the demands in combination with a direct link for transition represents a classical model of a phishing attack.

Such methods are aimed at the vulnerability of users utilizing mobile devices, where the sender’s address is often hidden behind the displayed name.

Representatives of the Consumer Protection Society strongly recommend leaving such appeals without an answer, not transitioning via the links contained in them, and immediately moving the letters to the spam folder.

Owners of accounts of the payment system should check the status of their account exclusively through the official mobile application or by means of independent input of the website address in the browser, but never use links from doubtful electronic letters for this.

Threats in the digital sphere are of a systemic character and, because of the demand among naive users, their number increases annually.

According to cybercrime statistics, over the past year alone, about 334 thousand offenses in the high-tech sphere were registered.

Caution: Phishing as before remains one of the main channels used for obtaining unauthorized access to other people’s financial data.
