A United Airlines Flight Bound for Munich Made an Forced Landing in the USA

On Friday, June 19, a long-haul passenger liner of the American airline United Airlines, heading for Munich, made an emergency landing in the state of Texas by reason of a technical failure in the power plant.

The Boeing 777-200 aircraft, performing the regular transatlantic flight UA-102 on the route Houston — Munich, was forced to interrupt the flight and return to the airport of departure shortly after climbing. The coordinated actions of the crew and ground services allowed to prevent the development of a critical situation and guarantee the safety of the citizens who were on board.

As the specialized aviation portal Avherald reports, the air vessel with the registration number N78009 was performing a takeoff from runway 15L of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Directly in the process of climbing, the pilots recorded a drop in the parameters of the operation of the right engine of the GE90 type.

The emergency situation was accompanied by a series of thermal emissions and characteristic sounds recorded both by control instruments and by eyewitnesses. In the cabin of the liner were 267 passengers and 13 crew members, who characterized the initial stage of the flight as associated with a high level of psycho-emotional tension.

External observers, including the pilots of an adjacent aircraft located on the taxiway, confirmed the fact of a cyclic emission of flame from the malfunctioning power plant. Guiding himself by safety instructions, the commander of the ship adopted a decision to terminate further ascent at the mark of 3 thousand feet, completely turned off the damaged unit, and reported to the dispatchers about the necessity of an emergency return.

Details of Maneuvering and Evacuation of Passengers

The Federal Aviation Administration of the USA (FAA) issued a special informational communique confirming that at 19:00 local time, the flight made a safe landing on runway 08R. The time of the air vessel being in the air from the moment of the fixation of the malfunction until the touching of the ground constituted around 50 minutes, which is conditioned by the necessity of performing standard procedures and constructing the pre-landing route in the busy air hub of Houston.

According to verified data of the rescue service, none of the people located in the aircraft was injured. On the flight maps of the tracking portal flightradar, the trajectory of movement is clearly recorded: the liner performed a turn along a closed contour over the adjacent territory and along the shortest glideslope headed back to the airfield. Technical services promptly proceeded to the defect identification of the nodes of the damaged engine, and the management of the carrier deployed a complex of measures for the minimization of the flight delay.

For the delivery of the passengers to the place of destination, the airline allocated a reserve flight of an analogous type (registration number N798UA). The new transatlantic flight was organized approximately six hours after the forced landing; during this time, the necessary service in the terminal was provided to the passengers.

The repeated flight to the capital of Bavaria passed in routine mode; the summary lateness of the passengers upon arrival at the Munich International Airport constituted about six hours. At the same time, the emergency aircraft Boeing 777-200 until now remains at the repair base in Houston for the conducting of a detailed technical examination; since the moment of the incident, more than 42 hours have passed at the parking stand of the aviation enterprise. Investigation of the exact causes of the destruction of the turbine elements is being handled by inspectors of the Federal Aviation Administration.
