DOK.fest Documentary Film Festival will Held in Munich with Updated Concept and Secret Screening

Munich is preparing to host one of the year’s most significant cultural events in the field of cinematography. The 2026 DOK.fest documentary film festival program introduces a series of innovations affecting both the content and the ways of interacting with the audience.

Organizers have officially announced a new category of “Signature Films,” a grand finissage featuring the band Sportfreunde Stiller, and a mysterious secret screening whose details remain classified until the start of the session.

Under the leadership of Adele Kohout, formerly the deputy managing director, the documentary festival will present “Signature Films” for the first time. These works have been selected by an expert council to precisely reflect the key themes of each program section. This approach will help viewers navigate the schedule and identify the works of the current season that define the development of global documentary filmmaking.

Record Number of Applications and 22 World Premieres at DOK.fest München 2026

The screening of “Signature Films” will be accompanied by a discussion format, inviting not only the creators but also subject-matter experts to join the conversation. In total, the program for the 41st edition of the festival includes 106 documentary films from 49 countries, distributed across 15 thematic series. For 82 of them, the festival will serve as the German premiere platform, while 22 films will be presented to the public for the first time in the world. This confirms Munich’s status as a hub for debut documentary screenings.

The selection process this year was highly competitive, with the organizing committee receiving 1,440 applications from filmmakers. According to provided statistics, more than three-quarters of all proposals came from abroad, testifying to the international scale of the Munich film platform. Careful selection ensures that the final program includes works possessed of artistic value and social context relevant to modern society.

410 Screenings in Munich — Augsburg Re-included in the Program

Between May 6 and May 18, viewers in the Bavarian capital can attend 410 screenings and participate in 200 public film talks. For the second time, DOK.fest Augsburg will run parallel to the main event: from May 14 to May 17, eight selected films adapted for the local audience will be shown there. For those unable to attend in person, digital formats are provided. Approximately 80 percent of the festival program will be available online from May 11 to May 25 across Germany.

As part of the current program, 15 awards will be distributed, emphasizing the competitive status of the event. The official opening of the festival will take place at the Deutsches Theater, featuring Regina Schilling’s documentary about Ingeborg Bachmann. This choice highlights the festival’s commitment to the traditions of biographical analysis and the exploration of cultural history through the lives of past figures.

Finissage with Sportfreunde Stiller and Secret Screening to be Key Festival Events

For the first time in its history, DOK.fest will conclude with a grand finissage to summarize the festival’s work. Thorsten Berrar’s film about the band Sportfreunde Stiller will be presented as a world premiere in the presence of the band members themselves. This event will be one of the central media points in the May calendar, uniting the cinematic community, industry representatives, and fans of modern music.

Another premiere is scheduled for May 11 as part of an experimental format. This refers to a secret screening where a surprise film will be shown to the audience at a previously unannounced location. This initiative is aimed at attracting a dedicated audience and lovers of unique urban formats. Concluding the festival in such a manner reflects the DOK.fest leadership’s strive to find new forms of dialogue with the public while maintaining the professional standards of documentary filmmaking.
