The accident, which occurred at a level crossing in the Schwandorf district, claimed the life of a 76-year-old driver and caused significant damage to the train. The recovery process is ongoing, with a specialized salvage train en route from Leipzig to assist.
Fatal Impact and Damaged Infrastructure
The collision completely destroyed the car and left the locomotive heavily damaged, with several of its wheels derailed. According to the Federal Police, the requested recovery train had not yet reached Schwandorf as of Wednesday morning. The vehicle, designed specifically for handling disabled trains, is expected to arrive from Leipzig in the coming hours.
Limited Rail Service Resumes
Following a full suspension of traffic on Tuesday evening, train service on the affected route has partially resumed. Trains are currently operating on a single track while recovery crews prepare for the complex removal of the train wreckage. The site had to be thoroughly examined by accident investigators before clearance work could begin.
No Injuries Among Passengers
While the driver of the car died at the scene, none of the train’s passengers or the driver sustained physical injuries. However, several travelers were treated for shock and received psychological support.
Barrier System Under Investigation
A key question remains unanswered: whether the level crossing barrier was lowered at the time of the crash. The police have yet to confirm this detail and stated that the investigation is still ongoing.
Authorities are working to restore full operations, but delays are expected until the recovery is completed and the track is deemed fully safe for use.
