For many parents accustomed to years-long waiting lists, this sounds like a true sensation. Families now have excellent chances of securing a place for their child even outside the traditional start of the school year in September, which significantly simplifies the planning of careers and personal time.
Families in the Bavarian capital currently have the most favorable prospects for organizing care for their children. As officially reported by the Munich administration, the positive dynamic applies to both the current months and the next school year in kindergartens starting in September. About one-third of all vacant places in Munich‘s preschool institutions will be distributed within the coming weeks. A particularly encouraging factor was that in the current season, the number of places in nursery groups turned out to be greater than the number of applications submitted. In some areas of the city, a surplus has even formed — nursery places remain available and cannot be filled immediately.
Childcare places available in Munich: City offers parents real opportunities
Such a sharp improvement in the situation is due to a complex set of reasons. First of all, since 2022, birth rates in Munich have been showing a decline, which naturally eased the pressure on the social system. Simultaneously, large-scale city investments aimed at expanding the network of institutions and implementing programs to attract qualified personnel began to bear fruit.
To participate in the main distribution of places for the school year, parents must act promptly: child registration via the digital kita finder+ system must be completed no later than March 11. Specialists recommend selecting several suitable institutions at once, which significantly increases the likelihood of getting into a priority kindergarten. For those parents who require childcare even before the official start of autumn — for example, in April, May, or June — it is strongly recommended to indicate the desired start date in the kita finder+ system in a timely manner, as such requests are now satisfied much faster.
Mayor Dietl and School Councilor Kraus noted the success of investments
Third Mayor Verena Dietl emphasized the significance of this achievement for the city’s social stability. According to her, high-quality and reliable childcare is the foundation for ensuring equality in education and allows parents to successfully combine family joys with professional activities. The fact that Munich is today ready to offer families such broad opportunities was a direct consequence of consistent investments in infrastructure and close interaction with independent organizations that received comprehensive city support.
City School Councilor Florian Kraus added that intensive work on finding and retaining personnel in the educational sphere is finally yielding tangible results. The stabilization of the staff allowed for the opening of groups that previously stood empty due to the absence of educators, filling a significantly larger number of places. In addition to the electronic queue, parents are advised to establish direct personal contact with the administrations of the nurseries, attend open house days, and use consultation hours. For those facing difficulties, the city counseling service continues to operate. It helps Munich families with children up to ten years old in finding the ideal option — be it nurseries, after-school groups, child combinations, or supervision services for schoolchildren during lunchtime.Source: Munich Municipality
