On average, about 325,000 people were in Munich daily, including those who came for one day, municipal representatives reported. Referent for Labor and Economic Affairs Christian Scharpf presented the final report during a press conference. Significant flows of guests were ensured by major industry exhibitions such as BAU, Bauma, Intersolar, IAA Mobility, or Drinktec, as well as Oktoberfest, even in the absence of events like the European Football Championship or Adele‘s concert series.
Attendance statistics: the city hosted more than three hundred thousand guests daily
In official accommodation facilities in Munich with a capacity of ten beds or more, 9.3 million people registered, which is 0.3 percent more than the previous indicator. They provided 19.7 million overnight stays, which means a minimum decrease of 0.2 percent. The average length of stay was 2.115 days. After a very successful first half of the year, the number of bookings in the summer months expectedly decreased; however, the last quarter ended with an excellent December. In six months of the year — January, April, May, September, October, and December — new records for the number of overnight stays were recorded.
Tourism in our city in 2025 stabilized at a very high level and practically repeated the results of the exceptional 2024, and without football tournaments or a large-scale concert summer, Christian Scharpf emphasized. He noted that the distribution of trips by month became more balanced, which indicates the effectiveness of measures to reduce seasonality. Every month, more than a million overnight stays were registered in Munich. Despite the impressive figures, the level of tourism acceptance among local residents remains high: most Munich residents treat guests from all over the world kindly and perceive them as an enrichment of the urban environment.
Domestic market leads, and the USA remains the most important international destination
The key market for Munich remains domestic tourism, the share of which in the total volume of overnight stays amounted to 55.5 percent. The indicator of domestic trips reached 10.9 million, which is 0.8 percent higher than the results of 2024. International markets account for 44.5 percent, which is the maximum value among major cities in Germany. The share of guests from far-abroad countries is also higher than in other metropolises and amounts to 19 percent. In total, 8.8 million overnight stays were recorded from abroad, which is 1.4 percent less than the past period.
The USA remains the most significant international market by a wide margin. The indicator of 1,417,165 overnight stays made 2025 the second most successful year in the entire history of observations. Growth was again demonstrated by China (331,240 overnight stays, plus 13.5 percent). India and Japan also registered an increase expressed in double digits. Italy made an impressive comeback with a result of 658,590 overnight stays (plus 12.3 percent). An especially strong influx of guests was observed from Turkey; often these were tourists coming for shopping who, due to high inflation in their own country, prefer to make purchases abroad.
Tourism sector brought nearly nine billion euros to the Munich budget
By the end of 2025, 99,584 beds were available in 480 official hotels in Munich. The average room occupancy was 71.5 percent, and the average revenue per room reached 102.84 euros. According to a study by the dwif institute, in 2024 the city recorded about 20 million overnight stays in commercial facilities and eight million in the private sector. To this were added about 90 million one-day visits.
As a result, the total turnover in the tourism sector amounted to 8.8 billion euros. The direct tax effect for the Munich municipal budget from tourism services is estimated at approximately 153 million euros annually. It is expected that 2026 will also be successful thanks to planned concerts, exhibitions, and sports competitions.
