Reconstruction of Munich’s Willy-Brandt-Platz Begins: Replacing Concrete with Trees and Fountains

Willy-Brandt-Platz in Munich is set to become greener and fully accessible. Initial work has launched on this multi-million euro project aimed at revitalizing the area.

Messestadt Riem — The Munich City Council has approved an expenditure of 18.6 million euros for the redevelopment of the district. The city’s Building Department has now commenced the first phase of activities on Willy-Brandt-Platz in Messestadt Riem.

Munich Building Department Begins Transformation of Willy-Brandt-Platz in Riem

Until now, the central square in front of the Riem Arcaden shopping center was entirely covered in concrete. According to the Building Department’s plans, it is to be transformed into a climate-adapted, barrier-free, and attractive recreational space featuring diverse greenery. The planning was based heavily on proposals and ideas from local residents.

“In a square twice the size of Marienplatz, a ‘stony void’ has prevailed until now,” explained Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer, Head of the Building Department. “We will remove the seal from a significant portion of the area, design it in a natural style, and create high-quality conditions for relaxation,” she added.

In addition to planting 98 trees, the plans include a fountain system with 44 ground-level water jets and the creation of a wild perennial meadow. The latter is intended to serve as a valuable habitat for insects.

Phases of the Willy-Brandt-Platz Reconstruction

To achieve these goals, some of the current greenery had to be removed. The initial preparatory measures, which have already begun, included the felling of 50 existing trees on the square.

“An independent specialist inspection revealed that many of these trees no longer possessed sufficient vitality or stability and required replacement,” the Building Department reported. This measure was implemented in close coordination with the nature conservation authority, the city council, and the Trudering-Riem district committee.

Surface work on the square is scheduled to begin at the end of March. The primary focus will be on improving accessibility: routes and crossings will be streamlined and fitted with barrier-free paving. The construction of paths through the center of the square—passing through the future perennial meadow—is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Starting in 2027, the planting of flora and the development of active recreation zones will commence. The Building Department anticipates finishing these works by the spring of 2028.

Munich Authorities Promise Continued Access to Mall, Hotels, and U-Bahn

Throughout the construction period, Willy-Brandt-Platz will remain accessible to pedestrians. The Riem Arcaden shopping center, the hotels located on the square, subway entrances, and bus stops will remain open at all times.

The city is not financing the redevelopment solely through its own funds. The total cost of 18.6 million euros is nearly 50 percent covered by support programs. This includes funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment’s climate program for tree planting and subsequent maintenance, as well as the National Climate Protection Initiative for the expansion of the existing bicycle path.

Additionally, the project received 8.3 million euros in support from the Free State of Bavaria’s urban development program.
