Maxvorstadt Ranks Among Germany’s Ten Most Popular Neighborhoods

For most Munich residents, it's probably no surprise that Maxvorstadt is one of the city's trendiest districts.

But a new ranking from the travel provider TUI confirms it: Munich’s Maxvorstadt has landed in 10th place on the list of the 50 most popular neighborhoods in all of Germany—and it shows the strongest growth of all the locations studied. In an analysis of Google search queries for popular trendy districts, Maxvorstadt recorded a spectacular popularity jump of 173 percent, outpacing even established top districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg or Hamburg’s St. Pauli in terms of growing interest.

And it’s not just online where Maxvorstadt is in the fast lane. What was once considered purely a university and museum district now pulses with life and creative energy. Let us take you to Munich’s hidden gems and absolute highlights.

Maxvorstadt Wins with Culture and a Student Vibe

The secret to Maxvorstadt lies in its unique blend: Every day, around 100,000 students from LMU and TUM fill the streets, giving the district a youthful dynamism. At the same time, the renowned Kunstareal with its 18 museums—including the world-famous Pinakotheken and the Lenbachhaus—makes Maxvorstadt one of Europe’s most significant cultural quarters. This combination of academic vibrancy and artistic excellence creates an atmosphere that is second to none.

A Creative Scene Between Tradition and Innovation

Away from the major institutions, a diverse creative scene has established itself, shaping the character of the neighborhood. Between craft beer specialties and jazz sessions, culinary arts from around the world give the area an international flair. And on popular streets like Türkenstraße and Augustenstraße, students, artists, and neighbors meet for a relaxed chat over a beer, matcha latte, bubble tea, or espresso martini. This mix of tradition and innovative concepts makes Maxvorstadt a vibrant testing ground for new ideas.

Incidentally, the criteria for the TUI ranking also included the average prices of current trendy drinks: At a hefty €5.63, Maxvorstadt has the highest matcha latte price in the state of Bavaria.

Quiet Spots in the Urban Hustle and Bustle

Despite all its liveliness, Maxvorstadt also offers space to catch your breath. Hidden spots like Josephsplatz or the Alter Nordfriedhof (Old Northern Cemetery) invite you to linger, while the adjacent English Garden is just a stone’s throw away.

With seven yoga and Pilates studios per 10,000 inhabitants, the district even ranks 6th nationwide in the wellness ranking. This balance between an urban pulse and relaxed retreats makes Maxvorstadt a place where people of all age groups feel at home—from the stressed-out student to the health-conscious retiree.
