The path from Gaisalpsee to the Rubihorn is currently impassable. A photo on the mountain rescuers’ Instagram channel shows a debris slide on a steep slope.
Police also confirmed a rockfall in the popular hiking area around the Rubihorn late on Saturday evening. Accordingly, a hiking trail has been closed.
However, no rescue operation was underway involving police on Saturday evening. According to police, no one was injured.
Popular Hiking Destination: The Rubihorn via Gaisalpsee
The Rubihorn, together with the Nebelhorn, belongs to the so-called “Daumen Group” and is Oberstdorf’s local mountain. The origin of the name is quickly explained – it is derived from the nearby village of Rubi.
In summer, the Rubihorn is one of the most popular hiking peaks in the Allgäu. Online, you can find numerous travel and mountain guides recommending a hike to the Rubihorn, but they also regularly point out that the tours are not necessarily suitable for beginners.
The hike from Reichenbach (876 meters) via the Gaisalpe (1165 meters) and the Lower Gaisalpsee (1508 meters) to the summit of the Rubihorn takes about three hours. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required.
The summit of the Rubihorn is also accessible from the Nebelhorn middle station, Seealpe (1260 meters). The ascent on this moderately difficult mountain tour leads up the mountain meadows of the Roßbichl via many steep switchbacks. Sure-footedness is also required on the path via the Roßbichl.
A winter hike on the Rubihorn is also possible, but the mountain rescue service notes that the Rubihorn North Face in particular is often underestimated.
Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with an impressive panoramic view from the Rubihorn over the adjacent peaks of the Allgäu Alps and also of the Gaisalpsee.
