As the City of Nuremberg announced in a press release, the fire department was called to the Langwassersee at 2:13 PM. Passersby had observed foam forming on the lake and, concerned for the fish, alerted the emergency services. On site, the crews indeed confirmed the presence of foam, which extended from the inlet of the Langwasser stream in irregular patches across roughly one-third of the lake.
The fire department immediately initiated water sampling; however, based on this initial analysis, no specific pollutants could be detected. Despite this, more and more fish died – a representative from the Water Management Office was therefore notified and went to the scene to assess the situation. A representative from the Environmental Office and experts from the city’s drainage department also went to the Langwassersee.
The experts jointly coordinated the further measures to be taken. As a precaution, the fire department posted warning notices around the lake, which are to remain in place until the water samples have been analyzed. The City of Nuremberg advises against entering the lake or letting dogs swim in it.
